Guidelines for Successful Occasional/Temporary Child Care

Preparation for Occasional 
& Temporary Positions

  • Receive job opportunities by cell phone or pager..
  • Register and complete Infant and Child CPR coursework.
  • Upon agreeing to position, contact family by phone.
  • Describe qualifications/child care experience.
  • Confirm hourly wage.
  • Get explicit directions from the family .(Plan to use a map and take telephone number).
  • Plan to discuss activities appropriate for the ages of the children.
  • Develop appropriate disciplinary possibilities to be discussed with the family.
  • Contact both the family and Child Care Professionals, Inc. with any scheduling changes.
Arrival Process:
  • Arrive 5 minutes early or on time.
  • Discuss the following:
    • Phone number of parents or neighbors.
    • Names and phone numbers of doctor, dentist, hospital.        (A Client Emergency Information Form has been forwarded to the families to complete.)
    • Home security systems, locks on doors, etc.
    • Duties, hours, and transportation requirements, including mileage, automobile insurance and car seats.
    • Bedtime, bathing and TV rules.
If the family will be away overnight(s):
    • Locate medical insurance information and authorization forms. 
    • Discuss how meals and activities will be reimbursed.
